About the AI Opponent
The computer makes intelligent decisions at every stage of the hand:
| Phase | What the AI Does |
|---|---|
| Discard | Evaluates all 15 possible keeps, estimates expected hand score across all 46 possible starters, adds crib adjustment for dealer/pone role |
| Pegging | Scores immediate opportunities (15, pair, run, 31) before falling back to safe plays |
| Crib awareness | Avoids gifting 5s, pairs, and connectors to your crib; favours them in its own |
The AI plays fundamentally sound cribbage — strong enough to be a real challenge for beginners and casual players.

Strategy Tips to Win More Often
Discarding
- Keep your 5s — a 5 makes a fifteen with any of the 16 ten-value cards in the deck; it’s the most valuable card to hold
- Never give a 5 to the computer’s crib — it’s the single most dangerous card to gift
- As pone, send wide cards to the computer’s crib: A-K, 2-9, or other cards far apart in rank with no fifteen or run potential

Pegging
- Don’t lead a 5 — the AI will play any ten-value card for 15-2 immediately
- Lead a 4 — the safest opening card; the AI can’t reach 15 on its first play (max would be 14)
- Save low cards for after a reset — they keep you alive in the pegging sequence longer

Improving Faster
