Play Cribbage Online — Free, Instant, No Account Needed

CribbageBox gives you a complete cribbage game in your browser — no download, no sign-up, no waiting. Click a card to play it, and the game handles all scoring automatically including the trickiest combinations: double runs, flush, nobs, and his heels.

How to Play

Setup

When the game loads, you and the computer each cut a card — lowest cut gets first crib. Then six cards are dealt to each player.

Discard Phase

Select two cards from your six-card hand to send to the crib. The crib belongs to the dealer (you or the computer, alternating each round). The computer discards automatically using EV-based strategy.

Pegging Phase

Players alternate playing cards face-up. Running total must not exceed 31. Score points for:

  • Making exactly 15 or 31 (2 points each)
  • Pairs, triplets, quads of matching ranks
  • Runs of 3 or more consecutive cards
  • Last card played in a go sequence (1 point)

Hand Counting

After all cards are played, hands are scored in order: pone (non-dealer) first, then dealer’s hand, then the crib. The starter card counts for all hands.

Winning

First player to reach 121 points wins. Track both scores on the live scoreboard.

What the AI Does

The computer opponent is designed to play correctly at an intermediate level:

Phase Computer Strategy
Discard Evaluates all 15 possible keeps, averages hand score across 46 possible starters, adds crib estimate
Pegging Prefers plays that immediately score (15, pair, run, 31), falls back to first legal card
Crib awareness Avoids throwing 5s, pairs, and connected cards to opponent’s crib; favours them in own crib

Tips to Win More Often Online

Discard Strategy

  • Keep fives — a 5 scores a fifteen with any 10-value card (10, J, Q, K), and there are 16 such cards in the deck
  • Keep connected cards — sequences like 4-5-6 or 6-7-8 score multiple ways (fifteens, runs, potential double runs)
  • Watch who has the crib — when the computer has the crib, avoid throwing 5s, pairs, or cards summing to 5 or 10

Pegging Tips

  • Avoid playing a 5 early — your opponent can play any 10-value card for 15
  • Play off the count of 21 when you can — your opponent can’t reach 31, giving you more flexibility
  • Save low cards for late pegging when the total resets — they keep you in the game longer

Hand Selection

Use the Discard Advisor to evaluate any six-card hand before playing — it ranks all 15 possible keeps by expected value.
